hives.

There's a long list of things - I - want - to - do - once - I'm - fully - settled, and one of the first things on that list is tend bees.  I've always been fascinated by the process, enchanted by the notion that, if you were quite calm enough, you wouldn't really even need to wear protective gear, they wouldn't feel the urge to sting you.

So, when Beth mentioned that she was going to the hives after work to harvest honey, I quickly asked if I could invite myself along.  I was determined to not wear any protective clothing, and although I mostly stayed out of the line of fire, I can still say I've never been stung by a bee.

These two are beginners, but the honey was the best I've ever tasted.

  1. Beautiful colours! I've been involved with some urban beekeepers putting hives on rooftops of restaurants etc. Having tasted a few of their honeys, the variation in flavours based on location is amazing.

    1. I know! It's interesting how much the different pollens can affect the honey taste. I think in the future it would be fun to manipulate a bit, growing things that would result in delicious honey.

  3. Hubby built a top-bar hive andwe're trying to draw in a swarm. If not, next spring we'll buy a nuc. They are getting so expensive! Did you have the different mountain honeys when you lived in Asheville? My favorites are clover and locust. Planting borage for the bees in the morning, now that is has dried out some :)

    1. Yes, we did! It was my favorite to try out the different honeys in Asheville. Do you live close to Asheville? I miss that place all the time.

  4. Oh so sweet! I need to go visit my own honeys (pun intended) this week. I was hoping to start another from a nuc this summer but no such luck. Time happened. Bees. Are. The. Best.

  6. That's a great experience. If I were there, I'd probably be scared even if I wear a protective suit. :D
